Blood Drive At Library - Feb. 19
There will be a Vitalant community blood drive at the Winston County Library on Friday February 19th from 11a.m. – 2 p.m. Face coverings are required for donors and staff. You must call the library for your donor appointment 662-773-3212.
On the day of the blood drive, go to vitalant.org/health to fill our your confidential health questionnaire. Once you’ve filled in your information, review your responses and then click “finish” to generate your Fast Track Ticket. Print and bring your Fast Track Ticket with you. If you’re using a smart phone or tablet, zoom in on the bar code and take a screenshot, or save your ticket as a PDF.
Vitalant is testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies to find potential convalescent plasma donors. “Blood donations are down significantly across Mississippi, so it is vital that blood drives, such as this one, be successful,” said librarian Beth Edwards. “Please consider giving on February 19th.”

Genealogy/Local History Month at Winston County Library
February is Genealogy/Local History Month at the Winston County Library. Each week we will highlight something of interest from our collection to the public. This week we are announcing the acquisition of Rotary Club Newsletters from 1944 in Louisville, MS. Five Rotary Newsletters are included and were mailed to Louisville native Bernard T. Hickman, Sgt. 1st class while stationed at the Naval Hospital Corps School in Bainbridge, MD. These newsletters were mailed to men and women from Winston County serving in the military all over the world.
Louisville Rotary Club officers in 1944 – Walter Bennett, President; Walter Darby, Secretary/Treasurer; Bill Day, Claude Fair Program Chairmen; Bill Bennett, C. P. Thrailkill and Charlie Irwin, co-editors of the newsletter.
Winston County locations mentioned are The Community Center (now the Chamber of Commerce/Economic Development), The Teen Tavern, Blackwood’s Barber Shop, Old Parks Hotel and Doyle Lake.
“The newsletters are quite humorous and speak of so many old family names in Winston County.” said librarian Beth Edwards. “Bass fishing on Doyle Lake; dances at the Community Center; interesting programs at Rotary meetings such as Mr. Charles Fair working for the F.B.I in Cleveland, New York and Detroit; farming conditions in Winston County and so much more.”
Photocopies of the letters are available for the public to read.

Library Holiday Closing
The Winston County Library will be closed Monday, January 18th, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2021.
Due to COVID-19, this year's celebration will be a motorcade starting at the coliseum and ending at the coliseum.
Line -up will start at 9:30 a.m. and the motorcade parade will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.
All vehicles in the motorcade are asked to be decorated, in honor of Dr. King.
If for any reason you must exit your vehicle, please wear face masks and practice social distancing.

During December, the library will be giving away holiday gift bags (while supplies last) to any child 12 and under that visits the library.
These holiday snowman gift bags, will include a random DIY craft ornament, a free children's book, and a candy cane for your child to enjoy.

Holiday Giftbag Giveaway at the Winston County Library
Holliday giftbags full of DIY crafts, books, and candy canes will be given away to an child 12 and under who comes to the library during the month of December (while supplies last – we have 100 bags).

The City of Louisville Solid Waste Garbage Pickup schedule has been changed so that the Thursday route will be picked up on Saturday. The Thursday, November 26, 2020, garbage pickup will be made on Saturday, November 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Friday route is not changed.

The Coalition for a Healthy Winston County will host a Thanksgiving Farmers Market on Monday, November 23, 2020. The market will be held inside the Louisville Coliseum, 245 Ivy Ave, Louisville, MS. Vendors will set up at 3:00 pm and Customers can buy at 3:30 pm. There is no charge to vendors to set up a booth. Social distancing and mask-wearing are required according to COVID 19 Guidelines.

The market will offer sweet potatoes, collard greens, turnip greens, B Leigh’s sweet treats cupcakes, pecan and sweet potato pies, cakes, pepper sauce, pickled squash, homemade pickles, chow chow, homemade jellies, pork skins, flavored popcorn, and Christmas wreaths and ornaments, parched peanuts, skins, and pecans.

Join Your Local Friends of the Library Organization During November
Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System (MMRLS) is happy to be introducing “Friends of the Library Sign Up Month” at all its library locations in Attala, Holmes, Leake, Montgomery, and Winston County. During this November event, library guests are encouraged to join their local chapter of the Friends of the Library advocacy group.
What is Friends of the Library and why should you join? Friends of the Library is a national organization of library supporters with local chapters throughout our state. Friends groups are library advocates who come together to support, improve, and promote their local library.
Starting this year, Friends of the Library members will receive a unique library card which provides a special system wide benefit of half-price print/copy/fax services. Friends groups help raise funds for special library programs, advocate for library services, volunteer for the children’s summer reading program, sponsor National Library Week events, as well as performing other voluntary duties/activities. This low fee membership would also be an excellent holiday gift idea for the library enthusiast in your life.
Each Friends group operates independently from their local library but can support their local branch through the various means already mentioned.
“By joining a Friends of the Library group, you can help make a difference in your local community and help expand the reach of the library.
